I am a son and friend. A lifelong learner and leader within my school, DECA, tennis team and community, I bring kindness, empathy, compassion, grit, and a spirit of service to everything I do.

About me

Hello! Thanks for visiting! I'm a North Dakota transplant who moved to Lexington, S.C., two weeks before the start of my freshman year. Something magical happens when you leave the only state you know, the comfort of your friends, family and your sense of security: Fear forces growth. Pain becomes muscle. You decide you are not going to survive; you are going to thrive.

I found myself in South Carolina, and I challenged myself by stepping into uncomfortable situations, facing rejection and being vulnerable.

Today, I am Vice President of Leadership for South Carolina DECA. I'm an intern for Columbia's top Realtor. I'm a Palmetto Boys State graduate. I'm a varsity tennis captain. But most importantly, I am me. I like whom I have grown into, and I hope you will too.

Leadership

DECA

You could say that DECA built me.

I walked into my first DECA meeting shy and self conscious. I was met with a supportive team who inspired me to do more, be brave and vulnerable. Today, those people are my friends. We celebrate, encourage, challenge, and love each other.

Tennis

When I moved to South Carolina, I had primarily been a competitive soccer player with some tennis experience. Something happened, though, once I arrived in South Carolina. I left soccer and went all in with tennis. My game has improved substantially, and I have hard work, great coaches and an incredible tennis family to thank for this. I love tennis. The feel of the courts. The smell of a fresh can of balls. The rush of competition.

Tennis will always be a part of my story, and I hope to continue playing throughout my college years and beyond.

Boys State

My week at Palmetto Boys State was life changing. Unsure of what to expect, I quickly became a part of a force of life, learning all aspects of city, county, state, and federal government among 1,000 of South Carolina's finest who would ultimately become my brothers. I struggle to find the words to adequately describe what Boys State means to me, but I will leave it at this: I found my voice. I found my brothers. I found my place in this country. And, I found my possibility.

Internship

I've long been fascinated by progress. How does a city develop into a sweeping landscape of skyscrapers, activities, storefronts and restaurants? How does neighborhood gentrification work? Why are some Realtors successful while others are not? I've long followed Sarah Bennett and her Team Sarah real estate group. Sarah has the edge on our neighborhood market and much of Columbia, most recently named Columbia's top Realtor.

I decided I wanted to learn more, and who better than the best? So, I wrote Sarah Bennett, introduced myself, attached my resume and asked for an internship.

Several interviews later, she took me on, and today, I'm proud to be Team Sarah's intern.

Three things about me

I'm from North Dakota

That's right. Land of -50 below and 50 mph winds. I've shoveled five-foot snow drifts and climbed snow banks to get to school when the roads were not drivable. (They rarely cancel school in North Dakota.) You could say it made me hardy.

I moved to South Carolina at the start of my freshman year. I knew no one and had never even been to South Carolina. My North Dakota work ethic and mental toughness prepared me well, and I've never looked back.

Service hours record holder

Giving back to my community is who I am. It started when I was seven years old, and my community was flooding. My mom took me to a community sand-bagging event.

I went on to become a peer mentor, and decided to raise money for Special Olympics in honor of my buddy. I raised $500 and jumped into a dumpster of ice water in the middle of a North Dakota winter. I still follow my peer buddy, and I just learned that he was just elected Homecoming King of his high school!

I make killer donuts

On a whim, I decided to turn my passion for donut making into service. In one day, with the help of my mom, I made 25 dozen donuts and sold them on social media to raise money for a local children's cancer nonprofit. I raised over $700 and was even featured on local news!

Since then, I've fulfilled requests from teachers, family and friends. It's a creative outlet and a challenge to come up with new flavors and themes.

What matters most

Family

There is nothing more important to me than my family. When my mom, stepdad and I moved to South Carolina, all we had were each other. When my stepdad was diagnosed with colorectal cancer less than a year into our move, our world's were rocked. We collectively grew up, and we each learned a lot about ourselves. Our relationships deepened even further and today, we possess an impenetrable love for each other. He currently has no evidence of cancer, and this past December, we made it official when he adopted me at age 18, making him what he has always been to me: My father.

Friends

I left a large group of friends behind when I moved from North Dakota. Just three years later, I look at the immense circle of friends I have made in South Carolina, and I am astonished at how much my world has grown. Not only have I maintained my close friendships with my North Dakota buddies, but I have introduced them to all my South Carolina friends. We've learned about each other's cultures, religions and celebrations. Every year, I host an annual Bollywood party, and this past summer, was ecstatic to have my North Dakota friends fly in for the celebration.

My Papa

My Papa was the male figure in my life from day one. Throughout every week of my life, he scheduled time with me - just us guys. From the early days of going to play with the trains at Barnes and Noble to him taking me to the library and inspiring my passion for reading, he has been my mentor and rock. He has always shared wisdom with me, even if comes as unsolicited advice on women! Today, he and I read the same history books, have deep and philosophical conversations, and cheer each other on.

My Dogs

Where do I begin with these two? Naughty and Entitled. Or, we could call them by their real names, Dempsey and Dermot. These two give me comic relief, cuddles, companionship and sass. They have been with me through the move, my stepdad's cancer diagnosis, my stressful nights studying, and every big and little moment in between.
